What Does “Freedom” Mean to Me?
Freedom is all in life. I cannot imagine myself not being free to do what I really want — that is, working in the profession I am passionate about, studying or reading the books I desire, traveling to the countries or places I feel attracted to, have the friends I like to be with, etc. In short: choosing the kind of life I wish for me.
It is true many people are fighting for their rights, but when a person is a bird, a free spirit, she can thrive even in jail. There are many stories of people who were incarcerated because of his political ideas and wrote a book which years later became a best seller. Or a delinquent who entered in jail almost illiterate and finished a university degree many years later. (Yes, this was in Europe, where the Prison System tries to develop inmates to reinsert them in society.)
However, I acknowledge this is not the normal situation. Many people in difficult conditions become frustrated, resentful, and with countless other bad feelings, blaming others for their problems, not paying attention to opportunities around.
My definition of freedom didn’t change during the pandemic. I was doing almost the same as before it; that is, teaching, reading or studying, listening to music in YouTube, and meeting my few friends (5 or 6) at somebody’s house once all of us were vaccinated. Every day I was walking for 1 hour to…
