A Letter To My British Friend.

Today I received an email from a very dear English friend of mine, who like any Englishman of my generation is now around the 70’s and has lifelong friends -from his teens until now-, having traveled almost all over the world.

Also, like any educated and cultured Englishman, he has learned enough to know that although England is an island, there is no reason to have an insular mind and believe nothing needs to be changed in his country. He accepts every nation has its history, traditions, and problems.

My friend complains bitterly about the direction his country is taking, between an outdated nationalism and an intransigence inappropriate for the 21st century. He also finds to his surprise, that in trying to be moderate and empathetic to foreigners, his friends have warned him he is compromising their friendship and may stop talking to him.

If I didn’t have friends in other countries in Europe, I would think it was a problem unique to England, but unfortunately it is not the case. Whether in France or Germany, Spain or Italy, Hungary or Czech Republic, people of my generation lament what is happening in their respective nations. The basic problem is governments are run by power-hungry and generally inefficient people, whose lack of organization and clear, precise plans…
